A bit of 'how long is a piece of string' question but you would be able to fit 100 'average' songs recorded at 'average' quality in 512 MB, therefore 1 GB should be sufficient for higher quality and/or longer songs.

well it depends how large your songs are, and what quality they are.

512MB about 120 songs, roughly.
it works out approx, 1mb = 1 minute of song time
