Age ago I tried to install a microphone to use on my computer, but it wouldn't work. Now am trying to use a webcam with built in microphone, but again, it won't work. It's plugged in right, and installed, but only the webcam part will work. If I do a hardware test, it doesn't recognise a voice. Any ideas what the problem could be?

Possibly a driver problem with your soundcard. Go to Device Manager and see if it is suggesting that there is a problem. If you find the make/model number and have a Google, you may find an up-to-date driver.
