Out Of Date Browser
36 Answers
It would seem that my browser, Internet Explorer 11, is out of date - or a similar phrase - and is not being accepted by various sites - or at least those I've visited, such as ASDA - so a change is probably nigh!...so what would anyone suggest?...Microsoft Edge or Firefox or...? I use Windows 10 OS...NB: the easier the better, as I'm the original techno-duffer! Ta Muchly and Take Care All.

I think I will have to play around with it for a while and find out more about its workings. At the moment I am getting stuck with 'Narrater' On and/or Off but can't get it to read my emails. Not to worry, I'll enjoy messing about and get there eventually.
Hans.

I've been recommending Firefox for many year here, and I still use it quite a bit, but I've recently discovered Slimjet. It's based around the same development-level browser (Chromium) that powers both Google Chrome and the latest version of Microsoft Edge but it's faster and doesn't keep trying to link all your actions to Google or Microsoft. I love it!

Hans:
To get rid of unwanted bookmarks on the toolbar at the top of your page, just right-click on them and select 'Delete'.
To change the home page (that you get to by clicking the 'Home' button to the right of the address bar), click on the button at the top right of the page ('Customise and control Slimjet'), select 'Settings' and then 'Appearance'. Switch from 'New tab page' to whatever you want to see there. (I've got http:// theansw erbank. co.uk entered there but you might, for example, want to see https:/ /www.bb c.co.uk /news as your home page).
Then click on 'On start-up' to choose what you want to see when you first open Slimjet. (I've got AB selected).
Then click 'Advanced' and 'Tab options'. Look for 'Go to the following page when opening a new tab' and choose what you want to see then. (I've got 'Blank page' selected)

I've just about logged on this morning and am overwhelmed by your responses, though haven't read them all yet, just the first two and togo, a screen reader isn't free, unless you know otherwise and Hans, if you need to ask anything about your wife and her eyes, just send me a mail and I'd be glad to help in any way, I'm at: [email protected] - now, I'll get on and have a coffee and do the crossword before I look at any more answers, But Many Thanks indeed!
Togo, where were you when you found this "free" screen reader you mention?...I mean in which site or program or whatever it's called where you found the settings that showed you this reader, in what would I have to be - apart from schtuck! - to have a look and see how different it is from what I use - which is meant to be the top reader!...yeah, yeah, bad workmen always blame etc, etc!
Woodelf....The w10 "Screen Reader" is not a visual aid but a narrator. When enabled it will read aloud what is on the screen. You will find it in Settings and Ease of Access.
Press the windows key on your keyboard or click on the windows logo bottom left of screen.
From the menu that pops up...click on the cog wheel (settings)
From the next menu click on "Ease of Access"
Then on the left hand menu that appears click on "Narrator".
You can then enable the screen narrator, choose a voice that you like, choose the speed of voice and the pitch and volume. I would think it may be handy for you.

You will find Alice's "Screen Magnifier" in the same way.

Oh!...you mean Cortana!...yeah well, Cortana is cut off as soon as my speech screen reader starts and it isn't the reader as such, it's me, me who can't understand the terminology...I understand download windows edge button - I have to hit the button - but it's all the other text in and around it that gives me the jitters, on whether I hit the wrong key or do the wrong thing and having no way out if anything goes wrong...note the use of wrong, eh!...I've just had a brief look at MS narrator and not much there that aint different from my speech screen reader, which is JAWS by the way, so it's me is the problem, I think...and I am very sorry if I have messed you all about!...but then again, it might not be Cortana...?
