Could be any number of reasons - lack of memory, lack of free hard disk space, you may have Microsoft Journal running (if so, turn it off!), you may have software running in the background which is slowing your machine down, you may not have enough virtual memory, your files may be very large, you may be opening them from a floppy drive, take you choice!
I'd plump for the hard drive being fragmented. Run a defrag, see if it improves it.
