Hard drives did become much slimmer but it was still not good practice to put two hard drives in the same holding cage. Plus it was not necessary on most desktops, at least, because the case comes with 4 or 5 hard drive slots. The old hard drives got much hotter and gave off spurious rf that could cause interference with another closely mounted drive. Of course the new hybrid and solid state drives are much smaller, run cooler, and less prone to generating electronic noise. I still wouldn't mount two drives close together though.
