Setting Up An Old Ipad - Problem With Adding Email

I have an ipad that I want to give to my mother-in-law. I have created her an aol email account and want to add it to the Mail app on the ipad. However I keep getting a message saying "the username or password for imap.aol.com is incorrect".
I have had a look online and the solutions seem to be if you already have the account added and then get that message. However I am getting it when I am trying to set it up.
Any ideas please?

Did you clear and reset the iPad?

Some email accounts now need an app password. This does not change your normal password, its just one that lets an app or program access the email.

Hi giggsie. I managed to get it sorted by updating the software.
But I have another issue now! I need to create an apple ID for her however yhe previous owners ID is on it. Is there any way I can remove it without its password?

Good luck. I had the same problem and had many online chats with apple. Was the IPad reset to factory settings? If not you will probably have to do this and start the set up for MIL again. I did this with an iPad I gave to my grandson and all went well. The other problem Apple did their best but after 3 days the upload got stuck on the final upload and I gave up

For Apple ID do you know if the previous owner removed the device from their list of devices. You might have to contact Apple. Their on line chat is very good
