I am with EON and on the cheapest tariff. When I signed up I asked if I had to have a smart meter fitted as I didn't want one until they had sorted out all the problems they had with them and they said no but they had to offer me one.

No, you do not have to have one. However you will probably find that if you want to be on the best fixed tariff, you have to agree to them fitting one. This has just happened to me (E.ON Next have recently taken over my Npower account, as they went bust), and I'm fuming.
No, but they will try to make it attractive by offering lower tariffs if you have a smart meter.

Having one does not stop you switching suppliers in the future although it may cause some minor disruption.

They make switching providers much easier.....if you get the right type i.e. a Second generation/SMETS2.
Zacs, when I asked my supplier which type would be fitted they couldn't tell me so said I would wait until they could.
Sounds like you need to switch supplier ;-)
I like mine.
IMO not if you have any sense. When they have 'sorted out the problems' that's when the real issues start. All eggs in a single design spec basket, control of your supply without need of entry right from their office desk, data that will be readable and hackable by malicious elements. The company should accept their responsibilities and fit, and read, an external meter on a regular basis. AND stop making pathetic excuses to charge folk different rates depending on which legitimate method they chose to pay, in an effort to force you to do what suits them. Their fixed costs should be accounted for in the unit price beforehand.
Me too, all those pretty coloured lights and a clock on it too!

The horse has bolted I'm afraid, OG. Pandora won't go back in her box.
I recommend Symbio Energy.

Just entered my 3rd year with them.
