Probably - you need to find an app on your Smart TV menu that is an internet browser - look for Firefox or Chrome.

The main problem is usually the lack of a keyboard, which makes searching and interacting with websites a bit slow.

Dave, how do I find an app? I've looked in menu but can't see where it says app. Does my TV need a lead to connect it to the internet?
If you are getting Youtube and iPlayer then you must already have an internet connection (probably wifi).

What brand of TV is it? They all have their own different menu systems unfortunately, so it's hard to give any more specific help.
Some TV manufacturers have experimented with providing web browser apps in the past but, because they're so impractical, I think that they've all given up on the idea these days.

To be able to use browse the web you'd need a mouse and a keyboard (as with a desktop computer), a touchpad and a keyboard (as with a laptop) or a touch-screen device (as with a mobile phone or tablet). None of those options are really practical with a TV set, so that's why you can't really use a web browser with one.

Obviously though, you can still display the output from another device (such as a computer or mobile phone) on your TV's screen by simply using it as a monitor. To do so, you either need a suitable cable to connect between the relevant device and your telly or to stream what's on your mobile phone (etc) to your TV screen, using either a Chromecast device or possibly a built-in app.
Barsel - when my nephew installed the Firestick thing - I downloaded Amazon it took me 3 hours as I did only have the alphabet on the screen. I didn't think it would work but alas I can google, Amazon, facebook and outlook - guess the whole shebang.

Unfortunately I couldn't tell you how I did it - sorry LOL
I've a mini multimedia keyboard that connects to the TV (Bluetooth and Wi-Fi) which makes things a whole lot easier. And the TV also has voice-control, which makes me even lazier!

I have a PC in the spare bedroom with a desk and computer chair, but my TV is in the living room, and I was hoping to be able to use sites like this and browse websites in comfort on my sofa. I don't have other devices like a smart phone or a tablet, but perhaps the firestick that JJ has mentioned if someone can explain that to me please?
If you give us the make and model.

My Samsung has a browser.
An Amazon Firestick basically turns a non-smart TV into a smart one so, in many ways , if you've already got a smart TV you don't need one. However it's possible that their might be apps available for a Firestick that aren't available for your TV. You can certainly install the Silk web browser onto a Firestick but you'd still be faced with the problem of using it without a keyboard or mouse, which would make everything very tricky.

What's the make and exact model number of your TV (e.g. Sony KD43X7052PBU; it'll be on the back of it). If we know that, we might be able to find out which apps are directly available for your set (without needing to use a Firestick).

Tuvok The writing is very small but it looks like Toshiba 3213863DB.

Crossed post Chris.

I think that should be 32L
Yes - I do think I downloaded Silk but you must be patient with the Alphabet on screen as I was. But it is worth it. Sister doesn't even understand that I can bring up PHOTOS which I've taken of Maxie on my Tablet, photos of my latest great nephew on Outlook and Facebook and bring them all up onto TV screen. I call it a MIRACLE LOL that this little ole lady can do all that and the little ole lady is retired 16 years.

Barsel - download Silk and take it from there. If my memory serves me right. You may be lucky. Have patience my chile have patience my chile. LOL Good luck
Google doesn't seem to recognise that model but this one might be similar: https://tinyurl.com/2c7xchs2

See page 27 from that link, to find out how to use the browser app that's built into that model.
Crossed posts! Hang on while I look for the revised model number!
Question Author
Chris, that page won't open for me. Did you see my post at 23.07?
Question Author
Grrr stop being so quick.
Question Author
JJ, I don't have a tablet or a smart phone, only a computer and the TV is in a different room.
I don't think I'm as young as you think I am, I retired 15 years ago. :-)
Blast! It looks as if my link above won't work :(

Go here. (It should definitely be the right model now):
https://manualsfile.com/download/296oyuecp.html

Tick 'I'm not a robot'. Select 'Read online' (unless you want to download the full manual and save it, of course). Click 'Download'. Consult page 27 of the manual. That will tell you how you can locate and use the web browser on your TV.

Thanks Chris, I'll take a look but can't promise I will understand it. :-).
