would it be possible for the whole internet to crash?

theoretically, all the servers connected to the internet could crash at once, yes. but unlikely.

greater chance of happening: your ISPs servers crashing, thus disconnecting you from the internet itself (due to the way it's structured).

A few years ago the whole power network on the east of america got overloaded and crashed , i thought that by analogy it could happen on the net
If it was going to, it would have been on midnight, Dec 31st 1999.

The DNS servers could certainly crash. Considering how dependent we've become on them, that would be pretty catastrophic.
