Earlier today I was 'tinkering' with some of the settings on my laptop.

It now shows which web page I am currently using in the Taskbar, it didn't do that before. I have 'tinkered' some more but I can't get rid of it. I switched the laptop off for a couple of hours but it is now up and running again and it is still there.

How do I get rid of it?

right click on an unused bit of the task bar, click settings, then under settings - "combine task bar buttons" - select "always hide labels"

You could try hiding the taskbar. This would probably hide all your icons that are on the taskbar, then you could reinstall them, one by one, until you get the layout that you want. (I have not tried this, so I cannot guarantee success!)

bookbinder, I have hidden the taskbar for now. At least it isn't annoying me so much.
Do you usually have your Taskbar at the top of your screen?
When you feel that you are ready for reinstalling icons on your taskbar, this might do the trick. (As before, I have not tried this, so I cannot guarantee success, although it does look as if it might work.)

Jim - yes. On my Macbook it is on the left-hand side but on this windows computer it has always been at the top - it suits me that way.

Bookbinder, I may try that later. This laptop is getting on in age and needs replacing anyway. It is just too complicated trying to pick one which suits my needs.
Before you leave this site, wolf63, here's something else that you could try. Right click on the offending icon. You should see a message that says 'Unpin this program from taskbar'. Click on that message, and your icon should disappear.

bookbinder - I tried that earlier. It does remove the unwanted item but I normally have just the Google icon and no words up there.

I'll try and forget about it for now ☺

interesting that you have the task bar at the top, that would do my loaf right in!
Question Author
TTT, thanks, that worked - I must have changed the settings earlier.

I like the taskbar at the top, but I suppose that I would just get used to it wherever it is.

The computer in my Oxfam shop has everything at the bottom but since it is shared between me and the boss I better not move it.

Thanks to all of you

jno - I meant to go back and change it. I will now.
How weird, wolf. Your av for this post on latest threads is different from the new one shown in the actual thread. You have wizardy powers, respect! ;)
