There are various options depending on what phone type you mean and exactly what you are trying to do.

Do you mean on a landline or mobile phone?

Also you want to record the full audio of calls in progress I guess, not just log the numbers that called?

an answering machine will do it - then the wife lets the calls go to the machine, and the other one plays them back later and calls them back,

On most phones you can check who has called and it doesn’t matter if the phone has been answered. I would suggest one of these phones.
