for windows xp, i might add

Well you can download a "trial" version of MS Office 2003 from the Microsoft web site.

http://www.microsoft.com/office/trial/default.mspx

It is a time limit version for 60 days. Note it is 228Mb so will take a while to download.

You can download other MS software from there as well.

Why not get a whole office suite for free from:-

http://www.openoffice.org/

it is Microsoft compatible and becoming very popular.

You can get a free Word Viewer from Microsoft, which will let you open word files, but not create them.
I would totally agree with wideboy. Open Office is totally free, and does just as good a job as Microsoft Office does. It even has some features that the M$ product doesn't.
tomd you are my hero. I've been trying for a week to get my christmas card addresses and other documents on XP. Your download (word viewer) did the trick! Sorry for jumping into your site 'the freak' but thanks for asking the question!
