then it says that there is not a fault with the phone and i will not be charged for the call then after it has redirected it says press one to report a scam calls or press three for billing.

The quickest way to make contact with BT is to get them to run a line check.

Use a mobile phone to send to a text to 61998, entering 'PHONE', followed by your landline number, as your message. BT will then run a test to see if they can remotely detect a problem with your landline. If they do, they'll text you back within 15 minutes to book a slot for an engineer to call. If they don't, they'll call you back on your mobile within 30 minutes to discuss your problem. Doing it that way short circuits the umpteen different "press 1 for this or 2 for that" messages that take you round in circles when you try to phone their customer service team directly.

That automated text service operates from 0800 to 2100 Mon-Fri and from 0800 to 2000 at weekends.
