It is now going up and down when pressed whatever way you want. Stop and go as well when control pressed. Takes a while to close and then when you want to open you have to be prepared for up and down before it settles

If there is a 'door sensor' then this might be malfunctioning. Have a read of the information here:

Sounds like it might need some lubrication if the mechanism detects this extra load as the door hitting an object and stopping. But take care, my manually operated up and over garage door has a warning notice not to lubricate with oil.
Your problem probably relates to the batteries in the receiver control unit on the door needing replacing. The control box fixed on the wall should have an indicator light flashing or buzzer sounding as a warning.
Although the same size physically as common AA batteries, they are actually rated at 3.6 volts. I had a similar problem a few years ago, and sourced replacement batteries via Amazon or eBay (they're not exactly cheap) and not normally found in High Street or DIY stores).
