Panasonic Dvd Recorder Playing Up

I purchased Panasonic DVD recorder model DMR-ES20DEB in 2005.
I fear it may be time for a replacement, but meanwhile I have two programmes recorded.
The recorder has new batteries and I have ensured all connections are tight.
When I switch it on it shows message “Hello” followed by “self check” then it switches itself off. Then it switches itself on again followed by “self check” then it switches itself off again
I have tried pressing the function button on the remote but no result.
Any help appreciated. Customer service are closed until Monday

Thanks Tuvok. That is the same as the 56-page manual which I have read where needed with no luck. The recorder is not switching on at all now :(

Have you made sure that the mains power lead is properly plugged into the recorder (i.e. not coming loose)? Try unplugging it and then plug it back in again.

Is there a dvd in the player?

Hi etch. Yes, all cables / scart connections are secure and not loose. I have tried several times unplugging and reconnecting. Now decided to buy new model. This one is 16years old

If there is, and the machine is Off, ... Press Stop and channel up together. The disc may eject. If it does then make sure that any firmware upgrades are done and be wary of putting that disc back in.

hi Togo, Yes the dvd is stuck inside and I have tried all ways including pressing stop and channel at the same time. It is well and truly jammed inside.

Assuming there is a cover that comes down when you open the tray, see if you can prise it down and see if there is a hole where you can trigger the tray using a paperclip (as you can on a computer drive)

Can you get it into standby? If so press the channel up and down buttons together for about 5 seconds.

Just a thought ... when you are pressing the command buttons you are doing it on the unit and not the remote control?

Togo I thave tried everything you have suggested, over and over and there seems to be nothing more I can do. I will rest from the problem over the weekend and resume on monday. Thanks to you and everyone for all the help

It should be easy enough to get the DVD out - there will be a couple of screws down each side and then the lid will lift off.

bhg481, I hadn’t thought of that. I will unplug everything tomorrow and try removing the lid of the equipment .

The screws are so extremely tight and therefore have given up with this machine. I have decided to buy a new model which will be a huge improvement as it has more features. Thanks everyone for all help.

Freya, which model are you going to buy? I looked at buying one and they're something like £300, unless you're going second-hand. They're not easy to find now due to the change in recording methods over the past 10 years.

Thanks for the update. I've always managed the screws - the smallest pozidrive, I think. You'll lose your DVD if you don't get it out.

10clarionst. I have decided upon Panasonic DMR-EX97EB. (£279) far more features.
Richersounds is where the old one was purchased in 2005 and the staff there are excellent

bhg481. I tried all screwdrivers . I am not bothered about losing the DVD. It was a Maxell DVD-RAM rewritable 120 minutes

I thought it might have been a professional DVD you were playing rather than a re-recordable one. You'll probably find the new machine will take dual-layer DVDs (my Panasonic BluRay recorder will).
