Why Hashtags?

I admittedly am an old duffer but fairly tech smart. But what is the need to hashtag everything? Just read a post on Facebook that was composed 40 words. They then had to put dozens of hashtag this and hashtag that after? What is the point and what use are the hashtags? #Cheers #Thanks #Thank-you #Wasteoftime

I guess you can look up the hashtags and see what everyone's had to say on the subject?

they are just a search label, so they come up when people search for that hash tag.

If you click on a hashtag it will take you to the list of others posts with the same hashtag. It really works better if the hashtag is for a specific film, event, person, place, etc. rather than generic words like #thanks though.

The whole thing confuses and annoys me.

Mind you I have steadfastly refused to join Facebook or Twitter over the years.
