ideally, ask your neighbours. It can vary a lot from place to place, and it's better to hear from someone over the road than someone hundreds of miles away.
I'm with talktalk (fasterfibre? £22pm) & getting 40 mbps download speed.
I'm the same as dave and would do as jno suggests and also ask talktalk directly what is the best speed they can offer you. It all depends a lot on what is available in your area rather than who gives it to you.
We get about 40 mbs where I am in Dorset and that is the best we can get whoever and whatever we pay.
Well I am in Dorset and I just tested and get 106Mbs (even over wireless). I am with Virgin and it does cost a bit bit I need a good reliable connection for my work.

So as jno says, ask your neighbours.

It might be an option to go with a 4g/5g 'dongle'. My router has the ability to switch between the two or force to use one or the other. A mate of mine uses only that (but his sons are in the telecom business)

Again, ask your neighbours.
Well Dorset is a big place because I can't get Virgin. I didn't know TTT also lived in Dorset ;-)
You probably see him every day, Prudie.

HFJ, is that speed over WiFi? If so, connect by ethernet cable if possible and test your download speed again
Isn't Virgin different (quicker/dearer) because they have their own cabling & don't use BT at all?
Can only say that my woman is presently with plusnet, which I'd not even recommend to my worst enemy. They 'lost' the contents of her sent mail folder, continually send standard emails claiming she has too much in the account, but we've summed up the figures many times and she's well below the limit (unless they're hiding something from her). Most, but not all, the agents are polite but clearly can't help. The engineers are either not told of issues despite agent assurances, or they all have guano for brains since they never fix anything much. And to top it all the WiFi keeps dropping (regardless which router is connected) and when it claims to have connected it is often "without Internet". I guess one gets what one pays for, after all.
Davebro, yes.
They must have recovered the installation costs by now though. So ought not be charging that much more, if anything more.
im with talktalk mine hovers between 69 or 70mbps, id try a different router and ask them to check your line via thye have helped me a few times. https://community.talktalk.co.uk/t5/Broadband/bd-p/111
OG, Virgin is still expanding as the majority of properties in the UK does not have access to Virgin and they are also rolling out gigabyte broadband to new and existing customers.
son in law gets 200mps but he said he would never use that bandwith
35mbps is fine for most streaming etc netflix amazon disney etc.
