I have a TV with an "HDMI" port. I have a DVD/CD player with an "HDMI" port and "L/R audio " ports and "line out video" and "digital out coaxial" ports. I want to buy a sound bar - should I / can I obviously just make sure it has two HDMI ports - one for the TV and one for the DVD/CD player?

The DVD player does not have a speaker, the sound comes through your TV so you should only need one Hdmi
yeah but then you won't hear the subtitles!

I would use digital coax to connect the TV & sound bar
You could connect your TV and soundbar using the optical cable option - one is often supplied with a new soundbar.
