Virus? Scam

I am getting pop-ups (anonymous) that say 'This call is not free, chargeable at international or premium rates' with yes/no boxes.

Given that I am on broadband, what possible effect could these have?

(Adaware and virus checker produce no results)

I know that quite often the yes/no boxes are actually the opposite way round (if you click on NO it's really YES) I phoned BT and told them to put a block on my line so that it's not possible to dial "0900" numbers (premier rate ones)

Yes - but I'm not clear how it can dial at all if I don't have a dial-up modem. I don't think it can but am sufficiently technophobic not to be sure.

quite often these type of adverts are designed to scare you so you click on the boxes and it directs you to another web page they want you to see.
