As I undrrstand it, it hides where you are from the place you are looking at. To them you appear to be in a different part of the world. So those things banned to your country become available to you.

my company use a VPN. It's blooming annoying for me because my computer assumes im in the US and wont give me any local news/weather

companies use a vpn for security they will only allow people who are on a certain ip address to access company data and information if you work remotely you would need to use the company vpn to be able to use that ip address to then access work i think you are right when you say novice here you should know a vpn just allows someone to change their ip address and nothing more really

There is absolutely no advantage in your using a VPN.
A good one costs money and is pointless unless you want to access sites not available in the UK such as Netflix USA or want to access illegal sites that could get you arrested.

if you have 5 devices in your house then they all have the same IP address if you wanted one of the devices to appear like it is in spain and not france then you would need to use a vpn

If you travel a lot they are handy if you want to watch iPlayer or some other UK sites when overseas. Some of them work well for a time then iPlayer etc get wind of them and they no longer work.
