I am with above for quite a while and basically I can get onto all my sites except a particular one - Avast comes up saying there is an infection etc and for me to pay for them to remove this infection - cheapskate here has never paid before and so I don't want to pay. Anything I can do to remedy this. Thanks for any answers.

It's probably just them marketing their pro version. I assume you can get rid of the message easily enough.

Meanwhile put your mind at ease by running a full virus scan.
Obviously uding a different AV. You can run some free from the Internet. I've used Housecall a number of times in the past.
...using...

thanks OG for your answer but I am unsure how to run a full virus scan. yes Avast usually would have an area where you could avoid paying them but not this time. Is Housecall another antivirus - will I have to download that
As Chris advised a couple of weeks ago, uninstall Avast
https://support.avast.com/en-gb/article/uninstall-antivirus/#pc

Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security > Open Windows Security
(If, for some reason, Windows Security is shown as disabled, click to switch it on).

Sit back and relax. You don't need Bullguard. You don't need Norton. You don't need AVG. You don't need Avast. You don't need any other third-party software. Windows Security is all you really need.

thanks Zacs - will try and do that later as I am going to friend for a bit of lunch.
OK, enjoy.
Trend is the company that offers Housecall.

I'm sure many will feel it's overkill but a 2nd opinion on whether your computer has nasties is no big deal.

If it still works the same as when I used it you will be asked to download a small programme to run it's check, then all the AV data is supplied by Trend.
Or, of course, you could ditch Avast and use something else.
Like......Windows.
