An old lady once told me, 'Naomi, there is nothing to recommend old age'.

Is there?

I would imagine if someone of an age is free from financial worries, free from pain and has a healthy social life, old age could be worth waiting for, Naomi.

The opposite would, perhaps, have one looking for the door marked 'EXIT'.

Experience and wisdom.

I have far more of both than ever before, and aquire more of both every day.

There are no shortcuts to either, you have to be older to get them, but they are well worth having.

Same as Ken.  Pain and health definitely influence my answer.  Actually I grieve for my younger days.

The worst thing about growing old is you become invisible.

The best thing about growing old is you become invisible.

Old age?  Over 80's nowadays.  Is this the group you mean Naomi?

At whatever age people feel old, Labdybirder.  I think it varies.  Joan Collins is 90 and says she doesn't feel old.

I don't consider Andy as old and I don't know how old you are Naomi.  Some old people act younger than younger people.

Experience tells me that age has not brought me wisdom.

Strange how I knew everything when I was 18.

I come from a family whose female members lasted well into there late 80s/90s.  I hope to break that fact!

Thanks Countrylover, I was 69 last week, and I am more passionate about life now than ever.

Long may it continue.

I love being at metal gigs with my Levi's and Doc Martens and ELP tee-shirt.

I know I look like someone's dad who has got the pickup time wrong, but rock fans embrace individuality, so that's fine by me.

If you have your health - fine.

If not it is not good. Disabled and live alone. No, nothing to recommend it.

Joan Collins looks old to me.  Her wrinkly neck gives her away.

Good on you Andy,  I have a hubby who still wears Levis etc

'Ì  know I look like someone's dad who has got the pickup time wrong, but rock fans embrace individuality, so that's fine by me.' I've just  said something similar on the bald man thread!

So sorry if that's the life you have now Gill.  xx

I'm old and disabled and live alone except for my dog. However, there are a few people in the flats where I live who help me and I am so grateful for that.  Walk my dog, ask me if I want any shopping, bring my parcels in from the hallway etc.

Nothing, except it's better than the alternative.

(Until the alternative is better, that is).

Thanks LB.  It's not that bad as I still have my garden and mow the lawn with crutch in one hand and mower in other!

Still manage to do the garden but everything very slow and suffer for it afterwards.

There are a lot of people worse off and one must look on the bright side. One neighbour is very good if you ask but I am no good at asking.

I don't consider 69 old Andy.  So many more are living to be over 100 now.  I was fine until 81-82 then it all started.  I have a couple of friends who are married and in their mid 80's and every day of the year, whatever the weather, they walk 5 miles in the morning.  I am in awe of them.

Gosh Gill that sounds hard.  Would you not consider contacting the Red Cross in your area, or your local council, or Age Concern?  I know here in B&H they would send someone to help me if I asked.  Could you not get a gardener to do your mowing, you could talk to him/her at the same time;-)

No, it's my pleasure and hobby, lb.

I could not be without my garden. I like to get out there most days and do something. Yes, it is hard but I enjoy it.

I am nearly 83 and like you miss going for long walks and dancing! I get my shopping, etc with a walker. Can't walk unaided.

Not really. As I read this from my third home (coronary ward) the only joy is seeing all my family together and the love we have for each other. As time ages I am finding fewer active past times I can enjoy.Only my love for my wife and family gives me the will to carry on.Without them I could go in less than a blink.
