Does this model hold tv recordings on it's hard drive or do you have to record to a dvd?

The sales info is vague

According to Currys website it had a 500GB hard drive and will store up to 258 hours standard def or 129 hours of high definition recordings.

It will not record to dvd, only play them

I have this model, which Panasonic call a "DVD Recorder".

You record to the HDD...but you can easily copy any recordings to a DVD or an external HDD.

JohnLewis says it can record to HDD or DVD and has twin Freeview tuners so you can watch one programme and record a different one.

Twin tuners are important, you can record two programmes at the same time to the hard drive.

The Richer Sounds site also says that you can record directly to DVD....but there is no mention of this in the rather large and detailed instruction manual, and I have never done it.

Panasonic's own FAQ's states that recording directly to DVD is not possible on this machine...recordings go to HDD and you can then transfer them to a DVD if wanted (as I said at 11.46).

I haven't read the instructions for this particular model but my Panasonic Bluray recorder can record to DVD/Bluray but ONLY from a camera, NOT the tuners. ie, you can copy video directly from your camcorder to DVD.

Ginge, can you copy your recording from the hard drive to DVD using just this machine or do you need a separate external DVD recorder? 

Years ago I had a Panasonic that recorded to both but that was badged a HD/DVDR

The R indicated that it was a DVD recorder as well as a player

barry...yes, place DVD in machine and press "copy"...all done.

I, too, had an earlier model (still have the manual DMR-EX77) which recorded to either the HDD or to a DVD directly...I still have many DVDs that I recorded this way and some that were transferred from the HDD. All still top quality recordings.

I copied lots of old video tapes on to DVD with my recorders.  I had one machine that had both video and DVD R so I could do it all on that.  Fabulous but expensive piece of kit.    I still play them now and agian.
