How To Unlock An Ipad

Now i know people dont like these posts because its could be helping a thief, but im kind of hoping my many years on here means many of you will know i'm not some terrible common criminal looking to fence some loot, or whatever criminal say these days :D haha
But i need to unlock an ipad - when i was in a couple of years ago & brother loaned me one of their battered old ipads so i could use it in hospital - & now almost 2 years later i have forgotten the code & so has he & all the family - its an ancient old battered one.
is it possible or is it just an old expensive paperweight now?
