I bought a new laptop from Curry's. They said I would need a McAfee card to download. Cost£79. When I took the laptop home, it said I already had 30 days cover which could be renewed. I tried several times to put the code in from the card, as I had paid for it. Was told it had downloaded successfully.
After the 30 days, I was told my membership had expired. I was worried that the card had not worked. Then this week I was offered a half price offer from McAfee to resume my free 30 days for a year. I decided to pay it and get my money back from the card.
I received the receipt from McAfee saying I had paid in my GMail account. However, when I try to download it, it says my 30 days has expired! I tried again and they said they would send a passcode to my email. Nothing! Now I have a message from them saying I have not downloaded the renewal! When I put my email number in to download it, I get a message saying they don't recognise my gmail address! Yet they sent the receipt to it! I don't seem to be able to call anyone and I am going round in circles getting very stressed. Please can anyone help?

There are not many other choices if you want to go to a shop and inspect a large range of electricals these days.
Unfortunately, most of the reviews on these sites are for the initial buying experience...the price, delivery etc and I don't dispute that Currys may well be good at those.
It's what happens when there's a problem with an item...that's Currys big let-down. Which? customer service satisfaction tables look at problems and how they are dealt with, months/years after the initial purchase. This is where Richer Sounds, John Lewis etc excel and Currys fails.
Blubster doesn't post much but I am with him 100% on this. For what seemed years I was advising, on here, not to touch third party "security" programmes with a barge pole when it was the accepted advise being trotted out by the self appointed tech advisers. It had it's place in the early days of Xp, 7, and Vista with IE and other early developement browsers. But by the Mid 2010s had become just invasive and agressive particularly on a laptop with little RAM or Hard Drive capacity. The so called security systems eventually made a device inoperable and would even render it so slow as to be inoperable. There is no need for any of it on the newer systems and it will not protect the foolish user no matter what. On 3 different devices using W8.1(I know) 10(all versions), and 11 I have only ever relied on Defender that now comes embeded within the operating system. But third party( McAfee & Norton etc.) systems switch it into passive mode giving huge problems on a low capacity device when Microsoft upgrades or patches are trying to instal as they are not compatable with Defender( or at least weren't last time I looked). Currys should be more up front in explaining that they are selling devices with these systems pre installed or with instructions to load them because they are being paid by the avaricious sellers of the systems. I understand why Currys is a good place to go because you can at least see the goods and whether the sdcreen sizes and keyboards are OK for you, but for them to foist these systems onto the unwary is not an admirable tactic. If you go there insist on a new device that does no have a preloaded add on and do not install one from a "free" set of instructions with you own personal Key number.
Barry, Richder Sounds had a short period of selling laptops, about 12 years ago, when Asus first appeared I think. I used to work in their warehouse, which was also the place where all repairs came. It only lasted a short time. I think Julian Richer got them at give away prices. We didn't get any more in and I don't recall any coming back for repair. We could buy any item at cost price. I bought quite a few for the family. Never had a problem.

to clarify. I bought a new laptop from Curry's. The salesman told me that I would need Windows 325 (used to be Office) and McAfee anti virus and that they sold cards you can download to put on. After I got the laptop home, I had problems with Windows and they put that on for me. What I didn't realise was that McAfee is already on the HP laptop with a free 30 day trial, after which, all I have to do is pay for the year (discounted price too). This seems to have blocked the card, as when the 30 days was up they have said I had no cover. I tried to contact them and when I put my email in, they said they didn't recognise it! I tried several times, then in the end I paid a discounted price to,renew the trial. No they say they don't recognise my gmail even though they sent the receipt to that email! I can't even contact them online as they don't recognise my email or mobile! It's impossible! If I go back to Curry's they will charge me £25 for the privilege!
Thanks for getting back. As I now understand it:
1. When you bought the laptop you didn't ask about McAfee and didn't go with the intention of buying it. The sales person told you that you needed it.
2. Now you are not getting what you paid for.
Take the laptop and the card back to Curry's and get them to either refund the money for McAfee (as stated above you don't need it) or install it on your laptop. They should not charge you as you are not getting what you paid for.
The Consumer Rights Act states that goods must be as described and fit for purpose.
