just open a new address with them, and leave your old account inactive- eventually they expire and hotmail close them.

Thanks ludditefreak if I do this how to I export my contact list into the new address do I have to install them one at a time (I have an awful lot of contacts)

The easiest way would be to use Outlook Express to connect to your old hotmail account, then export your contacts, re-connect to your new account and import them back in.
