I have the grid - the block to move.  I cannot find the inventor despite heavy searching.  I cannot get it from the wordplay provided.  I have tried searching for what I think the title of the puzzle represented by the final grid but have drawn a blank.  A hint at this title or where to find the author would be useful

A few decent hints have been given on another site, they should help you solve the clue if you've completed that part of the puzzle (I'm being a bit more direct with the following).

A famous German WW1 cannon (Big ??????) matches the last two words (6, 4 letters) in the clue and this goes from 3 to 8 in the 12 letter author's name, **3456 _ 78****. The first letter of the first name comes from the obvious single letter abbreviation at the start of the clue. The last 2 letters of the surname is the 2 letter word earlier in the clue. For the 3 remaining letters you need a common synonym for the word in the clue that means 'steal' (jumble these 3 letters into the two remaining gaps).

...you might be reading the 2 letter word as part of a containment indicator (6 letters) so split it (4, 2 letters) and put that 2 letter word on the end of the surname.

By the way, I shouldn't have followed your 'author' lead - you're looking for a magician/illusionist (that's another pretty big hint on the other site).
