OK I have a motorcycle for sale on Ebay, I received an offer for the asking price (odd no 1). The buyer is in the Isle of Man (odd no 2). I messaged them back saying I would accept the offer ( I have not actually accepted via Ebay) but I was concerned that they were in the IOM. Got a reply saying  "After I have paid for it. I can iorganise people" - (odd no 3) - I replied saying "are you not going to come and see it?". The buyer has over 3000 transactions and is 100%.

OK so what's the scam here? I can't see it but my scam sensors are on red alert.

Well known scam, possibly the account has been hijacked

Question Author

ok so how do they make any money?

tell 'em you want cash on collection...?

Depends how much it is. £500 okay, £10k, less so.

Isnt this one of the Nigerian scams?Say you want £5000 for your bike. They send you a cheque for £10,000,but they want you to pay back £5000 in change. You send the £5000 back and then two later the cheque for £10000 bounces.Yes,its a scam.

"two weeks later"

Question Author

09:41 may be that though it wont be a cheque. I had a thought that if I accept on Ebay they can pay by Paypal and then someone claw it back later after the bike has gone. ...but Ebay don't do paypal anymore and I would demand IB transfer anyway. Is there a chance this may be genuine?

The most common scam is that ‘buyer’ will claim they can’t collect and will send a loader and the driver will pay cash. Then just before collection you will be asked to pay a refundable insurance payment into an escrow service , which of course the buyer gets and that’s the last you see of them.

Alternatively that will claim a payment has been made and you’ll get a fake message from your bank or PayPal saying the money is held safely and will be released to you once courier has collected.

Ne touchez pas ! (which roughly translated means, Not on your nelly.)

@09.43.If they do pay you by cheque or whatever i would give it three weeks or so till it cleared. If these people are genuine(which i doubt),they will easily wait the three weeks surely?

Question Author

09:50 no one burgers about with cheques any more certainly not me.

Is it a particularly rare car?

Question Author

yes very it has 2 wheels.

Question Author

It's a 40 year old vintage motorcycle. Not sure how rare.

Perhaps a litle more research into the potential buyer would be prudent but just a thought, there are a number of motorcycle collectors who live on the Isle of Man.

Oh,well, best wishes for this transaction.I doubt it is genuine.

Question Author

ynnafymim I tend to agree sounds too good to be true, probably is.

With a 100% rating it could be gensuine uless the seller has been hacked. I can see how hey would make any money though unless it comes later and there is some question over how or when they will pay. Maybe go with your gut feeling and don't sell to them.

What make and model is it? Genuinely interested
