Is The Public Expecting Too Much...

Comic Relief today but not a red nose to be seen around the shops here. At one time red noses were everywhere, their wearers enthusiastically shaking their collection boxes, but that doesn't seem to be happening now. Why do you think that might be?

I think that charity street collection is much more highly regulated than it used to be and there are all sorts of regulations about what you are allowed to do and licences that must be obtained. I remember stewarding at a charity event about 8 years ago and was strictly instructed that there should be no shaking of buckets. I think that this regulation in response to "chugging" which became a thing some years ago. I could be completely wrong about this though.
"Contrary to popular belief, shaking or rattling your bucket/tin is perfectly legal, if perhaps a little annoying!"

I think when it first started these big charity events were special and unusual, we weren't bombarded constantly by charity ads. I'm possibly in the minority but I'm effing sick of it all. As it happens yesterday afternoon I had live TV on and I must have seen at least 15 adverts for Macmillan, Weldmar or foreign water or donkey charities. Then I have the plastic bags through the door and repeated mailshots from marie curie (who we donate to). That's where your money goes - admin and advertising. I've had enough for one. I've never bought a red nose either :-)
