Comic Relief today but not a red nose to be seen around the shops here.  At one time red noses were everywhere, their wearers enthusiastically shaking their collection boxes, but that doesn't seem to be happening now.  Why do you think that might be?

Perhaps they don't need them. Has the money raised been falling in recent years?

people buy them from amazon if they want one

Question Author

It's not aboit buying red noses, bednobs, but rather the absence of collectors.

The amounts raised are clearly in decline, I can't see this year breaking any records.

Many people are having to tighten their purse strings and belts.

but your question was why are there fewer collectors for rnd. shopping has changed for a lot of people since 40 years ago, thereforepeople buy on amazon now  more people wfh, delivery culture has changed.

donation culture as also changed - who apart from oldies ever has loose change on them nowadays?

I think that charity street collection is much more highly regulated than it used to be and there are all sorts of regulations about what you are allowed to do and licences that must be obtained.  I remember stewarding at a charity event about 8 years ago and was strictly instructed that there should be no shaking of buckets.  I think that this regulation in response to "chugging" which became a thing some years ago.  I could be completely wrong about this though.

Exactly.  Well, actually, not fewer but rather none around here.

Got fed up with these pushed "special days" many years ago.

The only place I've seen them so far is at tkmaxx as they stock the official merchandise.

Charity collectors on the street can accept card payments these days.

Barmaid is right about regulation being tighter

BM, I read that shaking tins is illegal.

"Contrary to popular belief, shaking or rattling your bucket/tin is perfectly legal, if perhaps a little annoying!"

I wonder if not shaking of tins is a term imposed by the licensing body, Barry.  The event I was stewarding was very strict on this and it was in fact an event run by the City Council heritage bods.

Could be

To be honest I can't ever really rememberRND having collectors with tins, it was all about buying the nose

Mind you I haven't really paid much attention to it since I was in my teens

never took part in anything like this, never will...

I'm not sure whether "major charity fund-raisers" have had their day, but my impression is that - through things like Facebook, JustGiving, GoFundMe, etc - people give more money these days, even if how they give has changed.

Maybe the upsurge in black and brown comedians had led to them directly funding stuff in the lands of their ancestors.

It must be something like that because they ain't funny but I suppose they get paid for turning up and warming a seat.

Bruv.

I think when it first started these big charity events were special and unusual, we weren't bombarded constantly by charity ads. I'm possibly in the minority but I'm effing sick of it all. As it happens yesterday afternoon I had live TV on and I must have seen at least 15 adverts for Macmillan, Weldmar or foreign water or donkey charities. Then I have the plastic bags through the door and repeated mailshots from marie curie (who we donate to). That's where your money goes - admin and advertising. I've had enough for one. I've never bought a red nose either :-)
