what is the best and what different ways are to to format my my hard drive.

Your best bet is to read through something like this or this which will give you a pretty good idea of how to proceed.

if you need to reformat with xp here is how.

insert xp cd rom
restart pc
after drivers finish loading at bottom of screen
press f10 or wait and choose recovery console.
at "which windows installation prompt" - type - 1 (press enter)
log on with adminstrator password if needed ).( press enter)
type - map (press enter)
next type - format c: /fs:ntfs (press enter)
then answer y (press enter)
after format -type-exit (press enter)
then press any key when asked to boot from cd rom (xp cd)
