Can anyone recommend an online shop eg. where I can buy a new system unit (with windows xp installed) at a reasonable price? Somewhere reliable that offers good quality epuipment and value for money with top customer service? I don't want to buy a monitor or speakers or anything as I have all that - just the base unit itself? Thanks in advance.

Check the dell website. They send out offers to out work and some of them seem to be very good.

Search the web for a local PC shop who you can visit and talk to the people who are going to build it.

Or buy Micro Mart magazine and look at the adverts. The magazine also lists local computer fairs where you can find companies.
