When the pushpin is pressed in, it will leave that window open on top of Outlook - so the next time it checks for any emails that window will stay open with the message 'The requested tasks were completed successfully.' instead of disappearing straight away.

When set as the "pin" the window is removed after the send / receive has been done.

When set as the other icon (looks a bit like an acorn to me) then after the send / receive has been done the window remains till you close it down.

To change it select the small arrow to the RIGHT of the send / receive button, then choose "Send / receive settings", then choose "Show Progress"

You can then select on the small icon.
