I contacted BT before Christmas requesting changing to the Light User Line rental. They checked the last 3 months confirming the low usage and said that this would be ok. Nothing happened and contacting them again they now say as I have broadband (Tiscali) I cannot be put on the Light User Line Rental rate.

Does anyone know if this is LEGAL? as I hardly use the phone and therefore meet the light user criteria

I was also on the light user scheme and they automatically put me on the BT 1 package when I rung and complained they never said anything about broadband but asked if I had a mobile phone and because I did have one I couldn't go back on the light user scheme. My bills are between 35 and 45 and my phone calls are less than 5. So I can't even change supplier because I don't need cheaper calls just cheaper line rental. Ridiculous !!!!!

Sorry, you don't meet the light user criteria

They are listed here:

If you've got broadband then you're using their line, even if you're not making phone calls. They won't let you pay the cheap rate because you're using their line and it costs them to supply and maintain it.

As for being legal, of course it is. If you don't like it then leave BT.

Yep, I used to work for BT. We couldnt put someone on light user scheme if they had internet/braodband. Also, we couldnt do it if they said they had a mobile phone.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

I wondered if it was legal because I thought Ofcom were making a decision if BT could still charge a full line rental rate when the line isn't required for phone traffic. I accept BT need to charge something that's why I thought the light user charge would be fair.

This is the only way for me to be able to have broadband. No cable service available in my town.

So my hands are tied!!!!
