a network cable? if both machines have network cards. if not and you want to transfer to the laptop and not back again then you could use a cd-r. for small files use a floppy if you have a floppy drive. you might be able to use usb or firewire with third party software or if you have the money and a compatable pc/laptop get a airport card for the pc its called IEEE 802.11b it truely is the best way to transfer data and it great to surf on a laptop without wires.
A little bit of software called 'Laplink' will work well. All you have to do is install it on both computers and then connect them with a serial or parallel cable (can be slow). Not sure if you can download a trial version/free version or how much a new copy would be. It's another idea at least!
Consider getting an external CD-Writer. I got one 2 weeks ago from Currys for 129

Install the software on both machines and plug the CD writer into whichever one has the files you want to transfer

The bonus is that you also can make backups of your laptop files.

Otherwise get a free website space up load files from one machine and download to other
