It's like this: in a parallel version of our own Earth, the foundations of world peace are gradually being blown to pieces by hideous, invisible living bombs known as 'Heaven Smiles'. Harman Smith, an ageing, wheelchair-bound assassin, is recruited by somebody, somewhere, to eliminate key political figures and take out a few thousand Smiles in the process.

Harman doesn't work alone, though; no, he tends to let his seven other, all-too-real personalities - all with the surname Smith - to do most of the dirty work for him. He's also aided by his maid/abuser Samantha, and a choice selection of ghosts of previous victims who'd prefer to offer cryptic advice rather than cross over to the other side.
