The Basic Input Output System (BIOS) is a utility that allows you to configure how the fundamental units of your computer mainboard interacts with your operating system. Your BIOS was manufactured by AMI and, unless you are into tweaking, you can usually select "default settings" without doing too much damage. Crashing your operating system doesn't usually result in bringing up the "BIOS screen", you usually have to press a specific button (delete/F2) in order to go into the setup menu. If it continually forces you to go into the BIOS setup when you boot up, then you may have a mainboard hardware failure (floppy disk detection failure/CMOS battery failure) which will require professional help.
