Why is my tiscali 2mb broadband running at 35k per second?

I have just done a speed test and my connection is worse than dial up - Every few days this happens for a whole evening why is this?

It's probably to do with volume of users. Complain to Tiscali and consider posting a review at http://www.ispreview.co.uk/.

do you mean 35kBps or 35kbps?

Now its 1600 downstream and 300 upstream - rapid in comparison to earlier - Whats going on?

What does upstream and downstream even mean??
ADSL stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. The Asymmetric bit means that it is faster downloading (downstream) than it is uploading (upstream). This works 'cos you send a request with only a few K's of data, then receive quite a lot of data in return.

My BT 2Mb line is currently 2272kbps down and 288kbps up so it looks like you're still a bit short in the downloading speed. As antiguru said earlier, it's probably to do with "contention ratio" or number of users per exchange line. But there may be a fault. It might be worth calling them.
