I must sound like a complete novice in this day and age but can someone please tell me if I get any mobile phone which is "sim free" or unlocked, could I use a"Pay as you go" Sim card in it?

Usually yes. The sales person will give you a definitive answer, or give you a helpline number to ring.

There are actually two types of unlocking codes, NUC and GID1.


NUC codes unlock a phone to be used with any networks sim card whether contract or pay as you talk.


GID1 codes unlock a contract phone so it can be used with the same networks pay as you talk sim card.


Sim free phones should be NUC unlocked so should be fine with any pay as you talk sim card.


Also if you have a phone that it over 12 months old, your network provider should be able to unlock the phone for free.
