Some phones have 'In Flight' mode - the new Sony Ericsson phones have this. Unless you have this then you shouldn't switch it on in a plane.

There is a problem where flight attendants don't know if a phone is in 'In Flight' mode! This is talked about here: http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20040702/103240.shtml

I read somewhere that turning a phone on in a plane doesn't interfere with the plane's electronics anyway ....

The airlines instruct you not to for safety reasons. There was we report in one of the weekend papers (sorry, we get three different) that mobile phones definitely do interfere with aeroplane communicationand other systems.

For the safety of fellow travellers, keep it off.
