i seem to have lost the ability to click and drag the icons on my desktop to move them to folders, can any one help?

Have you tried right clicking on your desktop and looking at the "arrange icons by .. " link. Maybe something has been ticked that shouldn't be.

the only thing that is ticked is "show desktop items "

Sorry no idea then. I'm surprised that one of the experts hasn't come up with an answer.

Maybe later today - or you might need to ask again.
