Connecting not networking...

Hi, can I just connect my old laptop to my new desktop with an Ethernet or USB cable to transfer files from old to new?
I don't need it networked permanently or connected to the internet.
If I have anything 'nasty' on my old laptop will my desktop anti virus pick it up?

Get a USB Network transfer cable but don't pay the earth - try here (�9.95 and free delivery) (I've used a similar one to good effect):-

Thanks wideboy, I�ve got an Ethernet cable and USB cable already - would that do the job or does it have to be a �network� cable as you suggest? Do I then just connect them together and it recognises my laptop as an extra drive?

No, this is a special USB cable with a little 'bump' of electronics in the middle - well worth the money at this price (and easy to set up). Haven't set up a simple system with Ethernet cable - perhaps someone else can help on that.
