Distortion on playback

I am oprating windows xp pro and windows media player level10.

I have some 700 music tracks in the library and several playlists with anything fropm16 to 5o numbers in each list. One or more list is played in shuffle mode most mornings and may be playing for anything between 20 minutes to 2 hours.

From time to time a track will break up and play distorted, stopping and selecting another number and everything is fine again, even the number which broke up previously will play OK..

Has anyone any ideas as to what is the cause and what can be done to cure this problem (apart from a big hammer!)?
