It's just a fashion accessory, there is no practically difference in terms of it use and function.

The newer iPods also play video however so that might be a possible difference.

They also use different file types...the music downoaded from the apple store wont work on mp3 players

iPod needs software to put music on it, most MP3 players you just drag and drop which is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo but better as you can use them as memory sticks as well

Also i-pods won't play WMA files. So if you download from sites like Napster, you will not be able to play it on an i-pod.

Apparently the battery in ipods dies after a certain amount of time as well. I think other brands' mp3 players are actually better.
