High CPU

[oligopoly]

Hi guys. New PC (about 5 weeks old). When either Windows Explorer or Windows Media Player are running, each runs at about 50% CPU. Obviously this makes browsing my computer very slow, and when playing mp3s, the sound skips like a scrathced cd. Does anyone know if this sounds like i may have picked up a virus (or something similar), and if so, how should i remedy it? (I have McAfee and Lavasoft Adaware)
