If the latter, then this is a common problem on all laptops and is caused when the ribbon connector cable, which is routed through the hinge, catches and starts to come unstuck at the screen termination. If you catch the problem early enough it is possible to ease the ribbon's passage through the hinge with some WD40 and easing the screen backwards and forwards to loosen it up.
If you have left it too long, it will necessitate a professional (and costly) repair.
