I believe that some operating systems have a limit on the number of files that a directory can contain. What is this number?

You didn't specify which systems, but I know from experience that the root directory of a zip drive (windows based) cannot contain more than 30 entries. I have not seen a limit on the number of files within a subdirectory. Windows is not to fond of having too many disk partitions, either. Check out the knowledge bases of the OS in question to be sure.
