For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.You need to buy a ROUTER. This will split the single incoming broadband to allow it to be used by 2 or more PCs or laptops.
If you want to connect the PC and laptop to the Router via cables you need a WIRED ROUTER. If you want to use the wireless on the laptop you need a WIRELESS ROUTER.
Search in here, or on the internet, for ROUTER for more about how to set them up.
Or search on Home Network in the Windows XP help.
You can also put a wireless card into your desktop PC and create an ad-hoc wireless network (no router), and use ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) on the main PC to connect the laptop to the internet. The main problem with this is that in order to connect to the internet on the laptop, the desktop PC needs to be switched on.
