For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.If it's 5 years old, is it connected via a parallel port? If so, has the cable been removed/reinserted into the computer lately? Check to see if the pins are all straight.
If they are, then it may be a print head problem or an electrical fault within the printer itself. These probably wouldn't be cost effective to repair on a printer of this age, although you might find a specialist outlet that would be willing to have a look...
My Deskjet's print quality deteriorated over the last year dispite cartridge replacements. So even though it was still working I dumped it, and brought a new Cannon printer for �35 (but had to pay �12 for USB cable). I was really impressed by it's print speed and quality. Also the reasonable prices for cartridges. I used to be a HP service manager, you think I would have been a bit more loyal.....

With these printers sometimes over a long period some ink leaks or builds up around the bottom of the printhead and it gets on and INTO the contacts on the cartridge holder and it corrodes (eats) the printed circuit connections, if this happens no amount of cleaning etc.. will fix it, remove the cartridge and look at the contacts where it connects at the back, if they look black or discoloured instead of bright and gold shiny then it sounds like its time for the recycle bin.
