I am new to computers. can someone tell me how to start using bit torrent sites what do I need to do, where to go? thanks in advance

go to bittorrent.com and download the bittorrent downloader. after you have installed this you need to search for torrent files which tell the downloader which file to look for from other bittorrent users. i believe in the latest release there is a search function in the downloader's gui

there are superior 'downloaders' to the main bit torrent one.try bit lord or azareus to name but two.

i would be interested to hear how to max download speeds as i rarely go higher than 20k/sec if anyone can help.

Mattk: first, make sure your upload bandwidth is not being used by anything else. BitTorrent gives more download bandwidth to those who are sharing more. What is your upload and download bandwidth? In azureus, you can set how much you want to use: you should be using good settings..

The torrent itself can also play a large part. Make sure there are plenty of seeders and peers, and that the torrent isn't restricted somehow (some are for members only, but will let non-members download at low speeds).

As a test to see what your system can manage, try downloading the open office torrent:
http://distribution.openoffice.org/p2p/index.h tml

With that download, I get download speeds of about 230kbps.

Mattk, you should also make sure your firewall / router settings allow others to connect to you, not just you connect to them. It can be a bit complicated to get this going, but it's worth the effort.
