Pinging noise

Every so often i get a pinging noise on my computer, which seems independant of anything im doing, its quite loud pitched and happens intermittently, but not everytime i use the computer. can anyone throw some light on the root of the problem?

Pinging noise? I guess the first thing that comes to mind would be the BIOS battery running low.
I had something like that (actually, I still do.) An intermittent, random pinging noise - it took about three weeks until I worked out that the sound wasn't coming from my computer at all, from from my next-door-but-one-neighbour's car alarm.
I had this last year. I finally figured out it was only happening when I was a certain site. There was a discussion about it on the site's forum and it turns out it wasn't just me. We assumed it must have been one of an advert on the site.
